The Talisman of the United States is a 123 page booklet first published in 1990. There are two editions to the book, with a second edition in 1991. The booklet is encrypted. Clues in the book once led to the location of a real treasure. Since no one solved the coded clues, the treasure was moved in 1994.

The Talisman of the United States (a book of codes and symbols) presented three locations associated with the symbolism and design of Washington, DC (reported setting for The Lost Symbol):
1. Rome (setting for Angels & Demons)
2. Jerusalem
3. Rennes-le-Château, the center of the Holy Blood, Holy Grail mystery which would become the basis for The Da Vinci Code.
After the publication of The Da Vinci Code, interest in the The Talisman of the United States took off. Several writers began using its research in their tell-all-books, yet most if not all, neglected to site The Talisman of the United States or even contact Charles Westbrook about the use of the material.
Signed copies of The Talisman of the United States have resold for as much as $1,000.00 through Amazon.
The book is no longer in print. If you have downloaded a copy on the Internet, you are reading a doctored version of the book and not the original material.
Two other books were published in 1991 to subscribers of a newsletter connected with The Talisman of the United States. These books are The Talisman of Jerusalem and The Talisman of Rome.
The Talisman of the United States was the first book to discuss a hidden pathway in the city plan of Rome leading away from the Vatican. The pathway has nothing to do with the Illuminati or Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini as described in the novel Angels and Demons.
How the The Talisman of the United States came into Being
In 1791, George Washington visited key Masonic lodges in Virginia and North and South Carolina on his Southern Tour. These lodges date back to the early 1700's. This was the time-frame in which Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant was reportedly drawing up the plans for Washington, DC.
In April 1791, George Washington spent the night at the Crown Point Lodge in Pitt County, North Carolina. The Crown Point Lodge was a tavern and the home of Col. Shadrack Allen. (The original lodge no longer exists. It was considered a training lodge for early Freemasonry. The location of the old lodge was near Ayden, N C. Charles Westbrook grew up in Ayden.

In 1970, a friend of Charles' father gifted to Charles an old drafting board, a wooden easel, and a collection of old books and papers, some of which belonged to Col. Allen. Charles wanted to go to college and become an architect.
In the 1980's, Charles began re-studying the collection after reading the research presented in Holy Blood, Holy Grail (1982). In 1989, Charles began post-production on a documentary video on the founding of Washington, DC, to be released for the 1991 DC Bicentennial.
In 1990 The Talisman of the United States was first published.
Charles received a flood of historical information from readers of the book in the US and Europe and the documentary was placed on hold in order to perform additional research. Charles once offered the Allen Collection of Papers to the Smithsonian, but they refused to accept the gift.
